Things to do in the Pyrénées Orientales

The coast has long, wide, flat sandy beaches with a wide range of water sports, international golf course at St Cyprien, beautiful walking country in the foothills of the Pyrénées Orientales. The beaches give way to rocky bays and old port towns as Collioure (the inspiration for many artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall…), Port Vendres, Banyuls-sur-Mer (famous for the production of the aperitif wine of the same name, Banyuls),…

There is a wealth of natural and historical sites to visit. For a day of spectacular scenery take 'Le Petit Train Jaune' or drive through the Têt Valley into the Pyrenees, exploring Prades with its Church of St Pierre and Villefranche de Conflent. Three kilometers from Prades is the lovely Abbey of St-Michel-de-Cuixa, with its crenellated tower and beautiful cloisters. Perpignan, is the second Catalan city after Barcelona, and is well worth exploring on foot, the Old Town has the Palace of the Kings of Majorca and the Cathédrale Saint Jean both dating from the 13th century. Céret is a beautiful market town with a modern art museum exhibiting paintings and works by Matisse, Chagall and Dali.

For duty-free shopping, Andorra is an easy day excursion.

For those who wish to visit Spain, the nearby Costa Brava, Figueres (hosting the Salvador Dali Museum), Rosas, La Escala, Cadaques and Port Lligat (where Dali spent much of his life, the vibrant city of Barcelona,… ) all within easy reach from the French/Spanish border.

Beaches and the coast

Argeles-sur-Mer (7km beach), Le Racou (quieter resort), Collioure, St. Cyprien-Plage (6km),… These beaches are favourites for families, providing safe bathing zones., they fly the European Blue Flag, the European award for clean bathing water. A wide range of water sports are available such as diving and snorkeling, water-skiing, windsurfing, kite surfing, jet ski… Aqualand located at St Cyprien is a large water park offering fun to the family all day with a range of water slides and tunnels. There are boat trips and fishing expeditions from the marina Port d' Argeles along the coast and into Spain, or you can hire a powerboat or yacht from Port D'Argeles and St Cyprien.
